Membrane technology for separating water and oil

Remember the oil spill in the deepwater region in 2010? Intensive oil cover in the Gulf of Mexico has caused the death or homelessness of thousands of animals. The incident was considered to be the largest marine oil spill accident in history. One of the biggest challenges scientists faced at the time was how to clean up the mess.

Liquids formed by water and oil are difficult to separate. Although they are insoluble in each other, tiny droplets of a liquid are dispersed in another liquid. Scientists have tried many different methods to separate water and oil, such as using dispersants to reduce the surface tension of the liquid, thereby stopping the mixing of water and oil, but they have not succeeded. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced a new membrane technology that can be used to separate two liquids. The membrane has tiny pores that allow water in the oil to pass through and a special coating that attracts water but repels oil, leaving behind pure oil and transferring water behind the membrane.
The results of this study are published in the "Scientific Report" magazine. The membrane can be industrially processed on a large scale and separated into pure oil and water.
